Union to the Rescue
QUINCY, MA – When the Massachusetts Court System was notified that the PPE masks they ordered for all court employees would not be coming, the union representing Court and Probation officers immediately stepped in to help. The National Association of Government Employees (NAGE) had purchased 20,000 protective cloth masks from an American-made manufacturer to distribute to their members across the country. NAGE was able to provide 2,200 masks to the Trial Court to ensure that our members would be protected.
The manufacturer, Hart Schaffner & Marx produced men’s clothing before the pandemic but has been in the process of refitting their equipment to produce protective masks. Located in Des Plaines, a suburb of Chicago, the manufacturer was able to ship quickly and help NAGE get all court and probation officers outfitted as quickly as possible.
NAGE National President David J. Holway said, “We searched across the country to find a union workforce that was producing quality masks for sale. We count ourselves lucky to have found Hart Schaffner & Marx, whose workforce is represented by another SEIU local, Workers United. The manufacturer had been forced to lay off over 300 employees until they were able to retool their equipment, and now 80% of their workforce is back.” Holway went on to say, “We were happy to step up when needed, and prove that a great working relationship between unions and management can benefit not only our members, but the administration and the public as a whole.”
Mike Sorrenti, President of Trial Court Local 458 is “truly appreciative of the work our parent union has done to help fulfil the needs of our members.” All of the Trial Court Local Presidents have reiterated their thanks for swift action by the union.
“Our members deserve all the protection we can get for them, and we are eagerly awaiting the masks so that all officers can be outfitted appropriately,” stated Local 229 President Liz Chabot.
Kim Gruenberg, Local 118 President agreed, “We are thankful that we were able to act on this so quickly, to ensure the health and safety of all who work in the courts.”
