Worcester EMS Ramps Up Safety with Ballistic Vests

A Memorandum of Agreement was signed on April 8, 2016, guaranteeing every EMS professional on the ground with Worcester EMS will be provided a brand new and individually fitted bulletproof vest before the end of 2016.  This is a huge step towards ensuring the safety of IAEP R1-95 members.

The IAEP and management at UMass Memorial Medical Center, who own and operate Worcester EMS, will work together to design and implement policies that assure the proper use and maintenances of the vests.  The policy will be prepared in the coming month, and the vests distributed subsequently.

A similar safety precaution was enacted in Cleveland, OH, this past January, and hopefully will be implemented in many places around the country in the future.  Worcester EMS professionals have experienced shots being fired at ambulances in the past, so this precaution is essential.  It will give the EMS professionals peace of mind when responding to calls in rougher areas.  “This is a safety measure we are trying to enact with as many of our EMS members as possible,” says IAEP National Director Phil Petit.  “Our negotiation priorities for our members evolve with the times, and this is a new one to advocate for personal safety.”
