Upcoming Probation Promotional Exam

Regarding the fairness of the upcoming promotional exam, NAGE has received complaints and questions from probation officers of the juvenile, probate and family divisions. After your letters and calls to regional supervisors and the Human Resources Department, as well as discussions between the union and management, an email announcing changes to the upcoming exam procedure was disseminated to registrants on March 3, 2015.

We should congratulate each other for responding with a united voice to a situation that required remedy. We did it together. Thank you to everyone who recognized that when we speak as a group, the strength of our collective voice is louder than any one voice.

In solidarity,
Margaret Thompson, Local 229 President

The Probation promotion exam will take place on March 21, 2015 and will now be limited to the BMC, District, and Superior Court Departments.  This exam will consist of the following four sections:
·         Essay Section – For all registrants interested in a promotion to ACPO and/or CPO positions in these three Departments;
·         Skills and Abilities – For all registrants interested in a promotion to ACPO and/or CPO positions in these three Departments;
·         Knowledge Section – For all registrants interested in a promotion to ACPO and/or CPO positions in these three Departments;
·         CPO Section  –  For registrants interested in a promotion to CPO positions in these three Departments.
All registrants interested in promotions in these three Departments will have to take Sections 1 through 3 of the exam on March 21, 2015.  Section 4 is only for those interested in promotion to CPO positions in these three Departments.
Because of the unique aspects of the probation practice in the Juvenile, Probate and Family Courts, separate exams are being developed for promotions in those courts.  They will be administered at a date and time to be announced.  Source materials and further instructions for the Juvenile and Probate and Family Court exams will be forthcoming after the March 21, 2015 exam is administered.  There will be no additional fee to take the separate Juvenile and/or Probate and Family Court exams, and individuals will not need to contact the I/O Solutions website to register for them.

Any employee interested in being considered for promotions in all Departments will have to take all three exams.

Attached is a form that all registrants must complete and return to the HR Department at exams@jud.state.ma.us by March 10, 2015 that identifies the positions and Departments for which each registrant is interested.
If you have any questions, please contact the HR Department at (617) 742-8575.
