Thursday's EMS Week Honoree: Local R5-092 of Sumter County, FL!

Today's local honoree is no surprise as we turn to shine a light on the sunny Sumter County Florida and their powerhouse Local R5-092! Although graced with nicer weather than our New York or Minnesota locals in the last few weeks, this hardy crew of hard working EMS professionals has never stopped pushing for their patients. Covering a wide area with a dense and complicated populace, this local faces new challenges every day in a place some may have never heard of until today. We salute these heroes of the front line for the incredible work they do day in and day out. Happy EMS Week and stay safe out there!

A message from Local R5-092's National Representative Michael Marasco:

Sumter County EMS, owned and operated by AMR, joined the IAEP in 2011 as Local R5-02 covering a 580 sq mile area of the county they serve, including one of the largest senior citizen communities in the nation, The Villages. This area continues to grow at a rapid rate, making Sumter county the fastest growing community in the nation housing a large elderly population. During the COVID-19 crisis, this local continues to serve their community without skipping a beat, facing PPE shortfalls and continued high call volume due to their extended season and with the increased travel bans.

Every year, the local donates their breast cancer charity funds raised from t-shirt shirt sales to the Compassionate Hands and Hearts of Central Florida charity. This charity provides much needed relief to those suffering from breast cancer in the local community. Last year, along with the fire fighters who joined their EMS brothers and sisters, they donated over $4,000 from t-shirt sales alone, giving the charity the ability to assist 4 more people before the holiday season.

This local is unique as their transport times to the hospitals can be anywhere between 35 minutes and 1 hour. This puts them at a longer exposure time to the possible covid patients they transport. The amazing members of Local R5-092 have been unwaivering in the fantastic care they provide to their patients, even while they are acutely aware of the added risks they take upon themselves.
