Pregnant Workers Fairness Policy

Re:  ACTION REQUIRED: Review of the Pregnant Workers Fairness Policy

Effective April 1, 2018, the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act amends the current law prohibiting discrimination in employment, G.L. c. 151B, §4.  This law expressly prohibits employment discrimination on the basis of pregnancy and pregnancy-related conditions, such as lactation or the need to express breast milk for a nursing child.  It also describes the employer’s obligations to employees that are pregnant or lactating and the protections these employees are entitled to receive. Employers may not treat employees or job applicants less favorably than other employees based on pregnancy or pregnancy-related conditions and have an obligation to accommodate pregnant workers.

All employees are required to review the Pregnant Workers Fairness Policy for Executive Branch Agencies, even if you do not believe it is applicable to you.  Every employee shares the obligation to refrain from discriminatory behavior and it is important that all employees understand the law and policy.  Together, our workplace can be a more inclusive and supportive environment.

Thank you for your cooperation with this policy review.  Please direct any questions you have related to the implementation of this policy to your Human Resources Department.
