NAGE Leadership Responds to Governor Bakers Healthcare Proposal

In wake of Governor Baker’s proposal to increase GIC premium shares for state workers, NAGE leaders and lobbyists have begun meeting with House budget writers to press for a rejection of the proposal. NAGE National President, David J. Holway said he agrees with Governor Baker on equalizing all workers at the same rate, he just believes it should be 80/20 and not 75/25. “NAGE’s position has been very clear on this issue from day one. Our members work hard to keep the Commonwealth running, providing top notch services to the citizens of the Commonwealth every day. They should not be required to shoulder an unfair share of the burden, simply because they work for the State.”
President Holway also offered praise to House Speaker Robert DeLeo, whose positive comments on holding the line on health insurance were a welcome sign of support for state employees. According to State House News Service, Speaker DeLeo said, “Increasing the employee share of health insurance rates would greatly hurt a lot of people.” DeLeo also said, “What I hear from some of the folks who work for the State is they’re under the same difficulties as everyone else trying to make ends meet.”
NAGE will continue to closely monitor issues related to the budget as the process unfolds. Please check NAGE.org/State for updates.
