NAGE EMS Responds to Horrifying Shooting in San Diego

(Update 1) NAGE EMS members in San Diego were part of the emergency response to a horrifying scene in La Jolla where a man allegedly opened fire at an apartment complex pool area during a pool party.

According to several press reports, witnesses said a pool party was underway at about 6PM on Sunday, April 30, when the suspect arrived. He opened fire in the pool area and hit several people. Police in a helicopter said they spotted the suspect reloading a gun and directed officers to the pool area. A shootout ensued and the suspect was shot and killed. At least seven people were struck by gunfire in the initial incident and transported to area hospitals. One victim reportedly died at the hospital shortly after the shooting.

At a press conference late Monday morning local time, San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman confirmed the identity of the suspect as 49-year-old Peter Selis, who lived in the apartment complex where the shooting occurred. She told reporters that investigators have learned that Selis was despondent about a recent break-up with his girlfriend. Chief Zimmerman said that Selis appears to have called his ex-girlfriend from the pool area to tell her he had shot people and that police were arriving. He is said to have kept her on the phone so she could hear the ensuing shoot-out.

Chief Zimmerman said that two of the victims in the hospital have been listed in critical but stable condition. All hospitalized victims are expected to recover at this time.
