COVENTRY -- A Coventry police officer rescued a 96-year-old woman from a burning building early Wednesday morning, the police said.
Responding to a fire at 156 Read Ave. at about 1:11 a.m., Coventry police officers were told that a first-floor resident hadn’t gotten out of an apartment in the building. Officer Justin Favreau went inside, found the woman and helped her out of the building, the police said in a press release.
The building’s other two residents, a 26-year-old woman and her 7-year-old son, were able to get out safely, and there were no injuries, the police said.
The street was shut down for a while as firefighters extinguished the blaze.
After the rescue, Favreau helped the 96-year-old woman connect with a relative with whom she could stay, Coventry Police Chief Col. John MacDonald said.
MacDonald said the department’s patrol officers “do great work in Coventry every night and it mostly goes unseen by residents. Here is a shining example of a young officer working midnights who was right on the spot to make a lifesaving rescue...”
“I’m extremely proud of the work our officers do every day and the patrol division is the backbone of our public safety efforts,” MacDonald said.
The state Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the fire.
