NAGE Calls on Congress to Give Same Pay Raise to All Federal Employees

On January 1, 2014, President Obama secured a one percent Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) increase for General Schedule (GS) federal employees. This is the first time that most federal employees will see an increase in pay since 2010. However, this increase does not affect nearly 200,000 Wage Grade (WG) or blue-collar employees who work for agencies such as the Department of Defense and Department of Veterans Affairs. These WG employees are covered by separate legislation and Congress did not address an increase to their pay before the holiday recess.

"While NAGE is happy to see the pay freeze lifted for most employees, if President Obama and Congress believe that federal employees deserve a modest increase, it should apply to all federal workers including WG employees” said NAGE National President David J. Holway. “WG employees should not once again be treated differently than their GS counterparts. NAGE will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that the pay freeze is ended for all federal employees."

In November 2013, Representatives Tom Cole (R-OK) and Matt Cartwright (D-PA) introduced the Wage Grade Employee Parity Act (H.R. 3573) that aimed to get the same one percent adjustment for WG employees that GS employees receive. While the bill enjoyed bipartisan support, no action was taken on the legislation before the holiday break.

WG employees can least afford to suffer a fourth year without a pay increase particularly after a year of furloughs and the government shutdown. "Legislation like the Wage Grade Employee Parity Act, must be a first priority for Congress as it returns from recess" said Holway. "The nation relies on these employees every day, they deserve to be treated fairly and equitably." NAGE will continue to fight for pay equality between GS and WG employees. NAGE asks every member to join us in this fight and to contact their member of Congress urging them to pass legislation to ensure that WG employees receive the same 1% increase that was given to GS employees.
